The Gaslight Anthem: Feel Good Alternative Rock
If you are the type of person that loves positive vibes,
then The Gaslight Anthem might be the band for you. This New Jersey band
consisting of Brian Fallon (vocals, guitar), Alex Rosamilia (back vocals,
guitar), Alex Levine (back vocals, bass), and Benny Horowitz (drums) blends
alternative rock, folk, punk, country, and heartland rock to create music that
is really catchy and contagious.
According to many critics, the band’s sound is like ‘Bruce
Springsteen playing in a punk rock band setup.’ Their first album entitled
‘Sink or Swim’ received positive reviews from many music writers, columnists,
critics, websites, and bloggers all around the world. They followed up the
release of this album with an EP ‘Señor and the Queen’ in 2008.
2008 became a very successful year for The Gaslight Anthem. Their
next album ‘The ’59 Sound’ was also well received by music lovers all around
the world. The said album got the top spot in eMusic’s music poll in the same
year. They toured across the U.S. and Europe as part of the Social Distortion
tour with Bruce Springsteen and Hyde Park Calling.
They also graced the cover of Kerrang magazine even though
they were not featured in the said publication previously. Kerrang stated that
the band is one of the best new bands that people will hear in that particular
year. The following year, they were awarded with the ‘Best International
Newcomer’ by the same magazine. The band was blessed with strings of
performances in some of the biggest concert stages like Lollapalooza, Reading
Festival, and Pinkpop.
In 2010, the band released their fourth album, ‘American
Slang.’ They stated that the overall sound and songwriting process are entirely
different from their previous outings, as they were influenced by the music of
Eric Clapton, The Stones, and The Dominoes, which is very far from what their
band sounds like.
The Gaslight Anthem’s sound is influenced by punk bands like
The Misfits and American music icon Bruce Springsteen. They found a way to
blend this two contrasting genres to come up with music that is hard-hitting
and confident. The result was the upbeat sound that is very impressive and you
will find it hard not to bop your head with the music.
