'Somebody Told Me' About The Killers
Many music lovers and alternative rock junkies might be
aware of this band. The group responsible for creating 'Mr. Brightside,' The Killers
is the band from Nevada led by Brandon Flowers on lead vocals/keyboards, Mark
Stoermer on bass, and Dave Keuning on guitars, with Ronnie Vannucci Jr. on
drums. The name of the band was from a music video titled 'Crystal' by New
Order, which was one of their early influences. The word 'The Killers' can be seen at the bass drum of a fictional band on
the said video.
The band was formed in 2002, after Flowers decided not to go
with his bandmates at Blush Response, a synthpop group, as they moved to
California. He chose to form his own rock group after he saw Brit rock icons
Oasis at a performance. Afterwards, Flowers talked to Keuning after he saw an
advertisement that the latter posted in the local newspaper.
Additionally, the two other band members was added to the
group and they started rehearsing some of their material that eventually end up
in their debut album. Then, they recorded some of their songs and performed at
several clubs and bars in the Las Vegas area.
Moreover, they sent demos to different record labels in the
US but most of them have shown no interest in signing them. However, a British
rep took notice of the band's unique sound and decided to take the demo back to
his country. Their song 'Mr. Brightside' was
aired on UK's BBC Radio 1 show, which created a significant buzz about the
band. They flew to London and played several shows. As they perform night after
night, the crowd grew bigger and bigger. Critics were very positive about the
music and style that the band emanates.
June 2004 was very monumental for The Killers, as they release their first album 'Hot Fuzz.' The
album was certified platinum six times in UK, three times in U.S., Australia,
and Canada. The second album 'Sam's Town' was also a huge success, as it sold
more than 700,000 on its debut week alone. In addition, the album was also
certified platinum in different countries and produced the singles 'When You
Were Young' and 'Read My Mind.'
After those two monumental albums, the band also released
Sawdust (a compilation album) in 2007 and Day and Age (third studio album) in
2008. Several award giving bodies have given the band numerous recognitions for
their contributions to the music scene.
