Circa Survive - Progressive Alternative Rock Leaders
What happens when you put together members of This Day
Forward and the former vocalist of Cali-based rock band Saosin? It results in
beautiful chaos, which is popularly known as Circa Survive. This
post-hardcore/progressive rock band from Pennsylvania fused all of their
influences and talents to create an overall sound that will leave you
astonished.
Circa Survive was formed when vocalist Anthony Green was on
his way to California to join Saosin (his bandmates at that time) after
spending some time with his family back in Pennsylvania. During his flight to
Cali, the plane had a stopover in Phoenix. That was the time when he reflected
upon the situation and decided to leave Saosin. According to Green, Saosin was
having several issues that have affected him and he will not be happy playing
with the band if he returns.
As a result, he left Saosin and went back to Philadelphia.
Green met Colin Frangicetto, a guitarist that he has had jamming sessions with,
and decided to start a band. They have recruited Brendan Ekstrom, Nick Beard,
and Steven Clifford to complete the lineup. Ekstrom and Frangicetto have
previously played together in their former band This Day Forward.
In 2005, the band recorded and released their first EP
titled 'The Inuit Sessions,' which was followed by their first full length
album 'Juturna' under the Equal Vision Records label. The said album entered
Billboard's Top 200 album charts but received mixed reviews from critics and
followers. According to the band, Juturna was a concept album.
After two years of touring in support of Juturna and several
recording sessions, the group's second album 'On Letting Go' was released.
Unlike Juturna, On Letting Go was a commercial success, as it sold more than
50,000 copies in the U.S., entered Billboard's Top 200 charts at #24 on its
first week, and spawned more dedicated fans and supporters. Many said that the
success can be credited to the tightness of the band's rhythm section and
Green's ability to deliver songs in a very intense but sincere manner.
Following the success of their sophomore album, the band started their US tour.
In 2009, "Blue Sky Noise," the band's third album
was released. It exceeded all of the expectations as it reached #11 on the
Billboard Top 200 on its initial week. This album showcases Green's first foray
in guitar playing in an album with the band. If you want to hear more of his
guitar playing, listen to his solo album 'Avalon.'
Recently, the group released their second EP 'Appendage' in
2010, which contained several unreleased tracks. Green said that they are
currently working on the new album and on his solo album as well.
