Foo Fighters: The Beginning of an End
Nirvana was one of the greatest bands in history – but due
to several issues and incidents, and break ups, the reign of this Seattle-based
grunge juggernaut suddenly ceased to exist. However, the last nail in the coffin
was placed when Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain died as he shot himself in his Seattle
home in 1994, which started the descent of grunge’s prominence in the music
scene.
However, Nirvana’s former drummer Dave Grohl was secretly
writing songs during the course of his Nirvana years but was not telling Cobain
about it. According to him, he held all of the songs because he thought that
his songs were not as good as of those of Cobain. As soon as his former group
disbanded, many artists and bands offered him a slot on their band but he
turned them all down. He was planning on something bigger. Grohl began working
on his own group named Foo Fighters.
Initially, the group consists of Dave Grohl, William
Goldsmith, Nate Mendel, and Pat Smear. Then other members who were added or
have been replacements for those who left were Chris Shiflett and Taylor
Hawkins. When the name Foo Fighters was released, some people thought that the
group was just a joke. The word was derived from the word Foofighters, a term
used for UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects). Some people say that the name was
cool because it somewhat reflects on the characteristics of the band; they came
from nowhere and became very popular in an instant, just like the UFOs. On the
other hand, some critics do not believe that the band would make it big in any
way possible.
And as the band released their first full length album, the
critics were silenced as Foo Fighters showed them how great the band is. Their
album was sold like hot cakes and band merchandise sales exceeded every
expectation. Afterwards, they released their second album titled ‘The Colour
and the Shape’ in 1996. The album had great and positive reviews. They
supported the release of this album with a tour. By that time, Grohl and the
band have proven all of their critics wrong; they are not a ‘joke’ and they are
dead serious about their music.
‘There Is Nothing Left to Lose,’ their third studio album
was released in 1999. Their single ‘Learn to Fly’ was their first time to break
into Billboard’s US Hot 100 chart. The fourth album ‘One by One’ was released
in 2002, which also gained commercial success.
Until now, the band has been very influential to many bands
of recent years and in the future breed of bands. Who thought that this band
could go this far? Maybe some did, but many did not. This shows us how
important a person’s perseverance and passion for music is the greatest tool
for success.
