Between the Trees - One of the Best Underrated Alternative Band

between the trees
If there is an underrated band that I could recommend to music enthusiasts especially those who are into independent and alternative rock, I would suggest this band from Florida named Between the Trees. As indie aficionados know, Florida is also the hometown of alternative rock/baroque pop heroes Copeland, but Between the Trees is also on a league of their own.

Blending elements of mainstream pop, alternative, and hints of post punk, this band is truly worth your time. The sad part is, the band has already been disbanded, but many fans are hoping for a reunion so that they can enjoy the music Between the Trees brings all over again.

The band consists of Ryan Kirkland (vocals, piano), Jeremy and Josh Butler (bass and drums respectively), and Stevie Benz on guitars. It all started in 2005 when Kirkland and the Butler brothers decided to form a band in Orlando. Initially, they acquired Brad Kriebel to serve as the lead guitarist of the band. Afterwards, they asked keyboardist Wes Anderson to join their band to add an important part to their overall sound. When the lineup was complete, they started writing songs by combining all of their ideas together.

The amazing thing about this band is the fact that they released their debut album 'The Story and the Song' in 2006, right after they graduated in their respective high schools. The album was released by an indie recording firm Bonded Records.

After the release of their album, they began performing and touring to promote their first album. They were also part of an organization named To Write Love on Her Arms, which helps people overcome their problems regarding suicide, depression, and addiction. Other famous bands and musicians involved in this non-profit project are Boys Like Girls, Paramore, Evanescence, Miley Cyrus, Panic at the Disco, The Rocket Summer, The Almost, Underoath, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, and many more.

Many changes happened throughout 2007 to 2009. In 2007, the band signed with Universal Motown Republic but separated ways before the band release their sophomore release. The following year, guitarist Brad Kriebel chose to leave the band and was replaced by Josh Jove temporarily. By 2009, Wes Anderson left the band because he wanted to do something else instead of playing with the band. In the same year, the band released their second album 'Spain' and their first EP entitled 'Winter.'

In 2010, the band released a statement that they will be disbanding and it will be for good. They had a string of farewell shows for their fans.

Notable Songs From Between the Trees:
  • Spain
  • Changed by You
  • Gentleman
  • Miss You
