Anberlin: An Alternative Rock Band At Its Finest

Anberlin is one of the most popular alternative rock bands of recent years. Although the band began creating music since the ‘90s under the name of SaGoh 24/7, their popularity and success began when they decided to pursue another path musically at the turn of the new millennium.

This Florida-based quintet composed of Stephen Christian (vocals), Joseph Milligan (guitars), Christian McAlhaney (guitars), Nathan Young (drums), and Deon Rexroat (bass) are currently signed with Universal Republic after their stint at Tooth & Nail Records, a recording company that is known as home to many of today’s best Christian Rock bands.

All in all, the band has already sold 700,000 albums since their inception. Their first album Blueprints for the Black Market served as a precursor to what would be their bestselling album to date, Never Take Friendship Personal (this album sold more than 150,000 copies). Their third album Cities was their first album to break into the Top 20 of Billboard’s Top 200 albums, selling more than 34,000 copies in its first week alone. Their single Feel Good Drag, a song from their fourth album New Surrender, was their first taste of the top spot at Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart. Their recent album Dark Is the Way, Light Is a Place has also received positive reviews from critics.

Stephen Christian (vocals) was the one responsible for the band’s name. As they were exchanging ideas regarding the name, Christian suggested if they could use the word Anberlin, a name that he would want to name his future daughter. Other band members agreed to his suggestion and kept the name for good.

The style of their music is a mixture of heavy guitar riffs, infectious rhythm, melodic singing, and heartfelt lyrics. Some may classify them as a Christian alternative rock band because they were associated with Tooth & Nail, although this notion is not confirmed by the band.

LIVE: They Definitely Sold the Drama

Along with many alternative rock bands that emerged in the ‘90s, LIVE was one of the best. This Pennsylvania-based rock outfit led by Ed Kowalczyk (vocals, guitars), Chad Taylor (guitars), Patrick Dahlheimer (bass), and Chad Gracey (drums). They are said to be disbanded after a two year hiatus and lawsuits against band mates.
